The following text is transcribed from the Journal.

Long ago, there were people in Ashenfall. Not humans, not elves, nor anyone you might remember, but sentient beings with a life, a culture and a civilisation all of their own. No trace of them remains today.

More and more of the Kobalios began to take more than their fair share. The Wellspring was never-ending, but it would only release at a steady rate. Only so much could be consumed at any one time, and fewer and fewer of the Kobalios were able to enjoy it.

In their desperation, they used rituals and spells to draw more anima from the Wellspring than it gave, and this caused a tiny crack to appear in the skein of creation. From this crack, smoke rose and filled the bellies of the greediest of the Kobalios.

The effect of the smoke was subtle, but deadly. It left a hole in the heart of the infected that made them yearn for more and more anima; to feast deeper and deeper upon the Wellspring, regardless of how it might impact their kin.

Trivia

In Old School RuneScape, ancestral robes are rare drop rewards for completing the Chambers of Xeric.
In RuneScape, there is an achievement called It Should Have Been Called Ancestral, which is unlocked when creating a full set of Starbloom equipment to +5.
- This achievement is a reference to Old School RuneScape's ancestral robes, which almost made its way to RuneScape, but the idea was scrapped.
