It is perhaps fitting that the first pieces of rune equipment were worn by the creator of runes themselves, Guthix. Of course, rune metal is not made of runes, and indeed has no actual connection to runes at all, but Guthix, for all his many qualities, was not the greatest of wordsmiths.

The Dweller was a beast that had nestled into the Wellspring and the energies had transformed it into something more than it was. What had previously been nothing but an unpleasantly large arthropod, was now a great lumbering beast full of hunger and fury. The anima had twisted it into something resembling th e colossi and it roared out of the Wellspring straight for the god of balance.

Yet, for all his desires for a peaceful existence, Guthix had the warrior's heart and he was more than a match for the Dweller. Though the battle shattered mountains and diverted rivers, the Dweller soon found itself sliced in twain by the god's terrible sword.

He cast the body into the deepest depths of the ocean, in fear that it might one day return.
