It's not hard to see why a place in Kuldra's army was tempting for a goblin. Back in Brynmoor or Ghornfell, the diet was dirty water and rats. Your armour would be stolen from the weakest goblin you could find, and your weapon was likely to be a femur bone (with any luck, not your own) or a bronze sword that was more rust than bronze.

In Kuldra's army, it was entirely possible to be promoted to wield rune armour or weapons (Kuldra was at least wise enough to know that goblins shouldn't be given sharp weapons, so most of the time they would wield a mace). Goblins became, well, liabilities. They were used to whacking each other and doing barely any damage at all. It was culturally engrained to boff each other on the head as a kind of wake up call. But a rune mace would make that wake up call rather messy, and a playful thwack would lead to arms flying off.
