Perhaps these were once guards, or soldiers. Wild Knights protecting the balance of the land. It is impossible to say who these creatures once were, because now all they are is merciless dead.
The tragic truth is that many of these people fought as hard as they could against the tide of undead. They stood at the gates to the village holding back the ravening horde. They walled themselves up in the keep, protecting their allies. They stood at the gate into Fellhollow and said “you will go no further!”. Yet, now, they are the monsters they fought so hard against.
