The Wise Old Man has a saying that feels applicable here: 'modesty is overrated'. His argument is that we celebrate modesty and assume that there's some kind of value to it, but it rarely, if ever, has any value at all. No one has cashed in their modesty for a great benefit. Modesty isn't the cornerstone of any great achievement in the world. Some people may like you a little more, but - and this is the Wise Old Man we're quoting, mind you - 'being liked is overrated for all the same reasons'.
